Plan backwards from the submission deadline, using the time you actually have available. This worksheet breaks the assignment into outputs you can check: a clarified brief, source notes, an outline, a draft and a reviewed submission. It is a planning suggestion, not a fixed timetable for every assignment.
List constraints before allocating work
Record the deadline and time zone, required format, word limit and other commitments. Identify work that depends on someone else, such as supervisor feedback or access to a dataset. Put those requests near the beginning of the plan.
Estimate the time for each stage in sessions you can realistically schedule. A plan that assumes every evening is free will be difficult to use if you already have work or caring commitments.
- Confirm the submission date, time zone and upload requirements.
- List fixed commitments and available work sessions.
- Identify questions, permissions or materials that could delay progress.
- Reserve time for revision and submission checks.
Give each session a concrete output
Replace 'work on essay' with an output such as 'summarise two relevant sources and record their citation details' or 'draft the comparison section using the outline'. At the end of the session, check what was completed and revise the remaining plan.
Hypothetical sequence: first clarify the brief; next collect and assess evidence; then organise an outline, draft the answer, review the argument and check the final file. The number and length of sessions depend on the task. Research access and feedback can change that sequence.
Replan when progress differs from the estimate
If a stage takes longer than expected, update the plan rather than silently borrowing all the revision time. Identify essential requirements, unresolved questions and material that does not contribute to the task. Ask the relevant tutor about unclear requirements or formal deadline arrangements where needed.
Before submitting, open the final file and check the brief again. Save the submission confirmation where your system provides one. Completing a checklist does not guarantee a particular grade, but it makes the remaining work visible.
